Please do use our Association and experience the many benefits of full membership, one of which is the use of the Association’s special logo. This logo is awarded to all Full Operator and Associate Supplier members once their membership has been agreed by the Board and all dues are paid. It must not be used by any other associate member or by non-members. If, for whatever reason, a Company leaves the Association the SSA logo should be removed from all its material within 3 months of leaving the Association and from Yellow Pages on renewal.

associate (provisional) membership

Associate (Provisional) Membership is open to all applicants and entitles the member to attend all meetings organised by the Association. This grade of membership is primarily aimed at new entrants to the self storage industry to enable them to learn about the industry through networking and to encourage them to use the expertise of the Associate (Supplier) members to fit out their facilities to current standards.

The fee for joining the Association as an Associate (Provisional) member includes a one-off joining fee of £300, plus an annual subscription of £625. Both are subject to VAT at the standard rate for UK based members. The fees are correct as at 1 September 2007.

duration of associate (provisional) membership

Associate (Provisional) Membership normally lasts for the year in which a member joins and one further year.

upgrading to full operator membership

Associate (Provisional) Members are encouraged to convert to Full Operator Membership at the earliest opportunity. Qualification for full membership is not necessarily onerous; it is subject to the member operating a business providing self storage as defined by the SSA, meeting the Membership Criteria, and to Board Approval. Apart from requiring an operational site, applicants are encouraged to attend several meetings before applying for Full Operator Membership.

All applicants are invited to apply as Associate (Provisional) members. However, if the applicant is already operating a viable self storage facility (or facilities), the SSA will consider, at the time of application, whether the applicant may join as a Full Operator member. (see above for joining details).

cost of full operator membership

The annual subscription for a Full Operator member is £625. Each additional site is also subject to an annual subscription of £155. All fees are subject to VAT at the standard rate for UK based members. The fees are correct as at 1 September 2007.

reporting and annual subscriptions

Full Operator members are required to report any new acquisition (company or property) to the Association once the legal transfer to the Company has been completed. Full operator members are required to pay the annual fee for each of their centres.

Full operator members are also required to complete a simple annual statistical return for each site when renewing their subscription.

Each year Full Operator members are required to certify compliance with these Conditions and Membership Criteria by completing the relevant annual Certification when renewing their subscription. Companies with more than one site will cover all the sites with one central certification, commenting where necessary on any site which does not meet the criteria.

associate (supplier) membership

Associate (Supplier) Membership is open to all supplier applicants, subject to Board approval, and entitles the member to attend all meetings organised by the Association. However they do not have a vote at the AGM or similar meeting. Existing members place a very high value on the benefits of membership. The information on suppliers which is available through the Association’s membership is of particular benefit to new entrants to the Industry.

annual conference and trade show

The highlight of the year is the Annual Conference and Trade Show, which is open to anyone involved in the self storage industry. This is a major event in the world wide self storage calendar and we have been privileged to welcome delegates from countries as far away as New Zealand, Australia, Japan and the United States as well as from mainland Europe and beyond. This event is an excellent opportunity for suppliers to display their most up-to-date products and network with a large number of operator decision makers and potential operators.

overseas membership

Overseas Membership is open to any operator company anywhere in the World less the UK and Ireland. The benefits for overseas members are exactly the same as for an Associate (Provisional) Operator member. You are also not allowed to use the Self Storage Association logo. But you will have access to all the information, and you can attend all members’ meetings and the annual Conference and Trade Show at members’ rates.

The fee for joining the Association as an Overseas Member is a straight annual subscription of £150. The fee is correct as at 1 September 2007.
