Top tips for finding the right self storage facility
As self storage continues to grow across the country, the UK’s Self Storage Association announces today eight top tips to help consumers select the right facility. Whether governed by budget, the security of goods or the added convenience of a facility near to home, the following tips provide an ideal starting point for people examining self storage for the first time.
1. Convenience – self storage offers customers a great opportunity to declutter their homes or provides a stop gap when moving home. But remember, if accessing your goods frequently you won’t want to be making long journeys
2. Flexibility – be aware of the storage operator’s policy on accessing your belongings, opening times vary and you need to be sure you can access your goods when you need them whether in the evenings or at weekends.
3. Costs – there are some excellent deals out there, but be aware of any hidden costs. Get an accurate quote for your unit and then compare the costs of other facilities in the area.
4. Find a reputable company – be sure of who you are leaving your goods with. Any company that displays the SSA logo means that it has been vetted and complies with the industry’s recognized best practices.
5. Size matters - there is no point paying for space that you are not using, but have enough space to leave access channels so you can get at your belongings wherever they are in the unit.
6. Take a look at the unit – does it meet your needs, is it clean, tidy and well presented.
7. Security - consider the site’s security. Is there a security fence, surveillance system and round the clock security? You want to be reassured that you belongings are safe, secure and being well looked after.
8. Don't be overwhelmed - there are self storage providers located across the country, feel free to contact them and discuss your needs.
To further help customers find the right self storage provider, the SSA has launched a new “Store Locator” service. Customers can visit the store locator service on the new SSA UK website, simply type in their postcode and find the units nearest to them www.ssauk.com/locateastore.
Rodney Walker, Chief Executive of the Self Storage Association comments: “Self storage is becoming much more widespread in the UK and we feel it is important that those exploring the option for the first time ask the appropriate questions in order to find the right provider that can meet their needs and expectations. We believe that when a customer finds the right facility they soon recognize the flexibility, convenience and peace of mind that self storage can bring.”
The SSA’s decision to offer customers top tips comes as the industry celebrates another strong year of growth, recent figures from a Mintel report show that the self storage industry has grown consistently by between 8 and 15 percent over the last five years and now accounts for more than £360m of consumer spending each year.
