The Self Storage Association UK Annual Industry Report 2026 includes data collected from industry operators, customers currently using self storage and the general public.
This is the 19th year the Self Storage Association UK (SSA UK) has been surveying its members and producing an annual industry report. The report covers all viewpoints of the industry, collecting data from operators, customers and the general public.
The 2026 report highlights continued growth across the sector, driven by sustained pressure on the UK housing market. Domestic customers now account for three quarters of all self storage users, with 76% of demand coming from households. More than a quarter of customers (27%) use self storage due to a lack of space at home, alongside other common drivers such as moving house and major life events.
The report also shows that industry turnover reached nearly £1.3 billion in 2025, with total space expanding to 67.5 million square feet across 3,143 sites nationwide. It also identifies a demographic shift, with customers aged 55–64 now representing the largest user group.
For the eleventh year, the report has been produced in conjunction with Cushman & Wakefield. Their extensive experience in valuing self storage properties around the world, alongside knowledge of the broader property market, has further added to the valuable insights included in this report. The economic overview provided also gives important context to the performance and growth of the industry.
